The St. Tammany Healthcare Alliance and Delgado Community College established a unique partnership in May 2006 to address the urgent need for entry-level healthcare workers in our hospitals. The partnership received a National Emergency Grant (NEG) to develop short-term, employer-driven training programs. The Healthcare Alliance partnered with Career Builders to develop a recognizable brand, now known as Careers that Heal.
Careers that Heal addresses healthcare workforce shortages in the metro New Orleans region. Careers that Heal identifies career pathways and skills training leading to high demand healthcare occupations where the region is experiencing shortages. Careers that Heal convenes and coordinates with area hospitals, education and training partners, such as the community and technical colleges and our four year universities, the Region One Workforce Investment Board and other healthcare employers to address these shortages. We develop new programs, expand the capacity of existing programs and outreach to the unemployed, underemployed and high school students to build a pipeline of future healthcare workers. Many of the current programs have been funded by a $6 million Community Development Block Grant, received by a regional collaborative across a 10 parish area of employers, education and training institutions, and economic and workforce development organizations representing Orleans, Jefferson, St. Bernard, Plaquemines, St. Charles, St. John, St. James, St. Tammany, Washington and Tangipahoa Parishes.
